Chapter Five – Jade

“Woodland fae in the Montana and North Dakota regions,” Jade said, sitting with Karlath on a picnic bench in the park. Admittedly, her idea of a time out with Karlath didn’t involve yet more talk about the mysterious missing mother, but the conversation drifted there nonetheless. “So you’ve found a few hits.”

“Yep. At least three registered in the database, but it’s easy for a lot of the magical community to slip under the radar. I wanted to know if you might recognize these faces.” Karlath shoved some pictures Jade’s way, before chewing through his ham and cheese sandwich. This wasn’t anything like the date she’d hoped for. Oh well. Still an excuse to spend more time with him. He likely didn’t have any attraction to her, anyway. He never showed any kind of interest before. This current interest was generated because of her ability to track down a long-missing family member.

She studied the pictures, trying to compare the faces captured with the one she saw in her vision, but none of them rang a bell. She stated as much, and Karlath gave out a little huff of disappointment.

“Damn. Really hoped otherwise. But I suppose it would have been too easy otherwise.” He polished off his sandwich with frightening speed, and his blue-gold eyes examined her with an intensity that made her shiver. “So it’s not a fae on the registered offender’s list, or the DNA database we have. Makes sense. It’s obscure, probably has a home in the mountains. I still can’t figure out why the fae might have my mother in this case, but my father did say that the fae enjoyed their bargains…”

“It’s interesting to me,” Jade said, trying not to get too hot and bothered by his gaze. “How the fae operate. It’s strange, too. They must get something out of this exchange.”

“A magical slave,” Karlath said darkly, the scowl deepening on his face. “Maybe that’s what it has my mother for. Nothing stronger than a contract where someone is bound in magical servitude. You break those contracts, you die. It’s that simple.”

Jade gave a little shudder of horror at the mention of this, and let her attention carry over to the blossoming scenery around them. A clear, sunlit day, and the flowers were in bloom all throughout the park in their array of colors. The pathways were narrow and left plenty of room for the plant life that emerged. People walked along the paths, and there were No Walking signs for dogs around, which was unfortunate because this would be a lovely place for dogs to explore.

“Are you okay?”

“I don’t like the idea of a magical slave,” Jade said then, attention back onto Karlath. “People should have the freedom to make their own choices and to live. If this happened, if your mother’s will was robbed from her somehow for all these years, what a terrible fate that has to be.”

“Yeah.” Karlath was quiet for a moment. “I don’t know what it could have been like for her if she’s been this thing’s servant or whatever for all these years.
